A phone call was about to change Geoffrey Mwansia’s life.
Since 2008, Geoffrey had been working with non-profit organizations in Kenya. He specifically worked with programs serving people with HIV/AIDs and programs for children and families. Geoffrey loved working with people in need, but wanted to return to his home county of Kitui, where poverty was rampant.
In 2014, after a brief stint of working for Fadhili Trust, Tearfund’s local partner, Geoffrey was eager to take what he had learned back to his home county. Geoffrey had been supporting village savings and loans programs (VSLs) at local churches.
A VSL typically consists of a group of women who gather weekly to pool money together, and grant each other loans to start small businesses or pay off debts. Members are held accountable and given training on leadership, savings and study the Bible together.
Geoffrey had seen the transforming power of the local church first-hand. Using programs like VSLs, churches were empowering their communities to lift themselves out of poverty. He had seen women living in extreme poverty start small businesses that would help pay for their children’s school fees and for their family’s food.
Praying for renewal and restoration in his home, Geoffrey received a phone call in May 2015 from Fadhili Trust. They wanted to start VSL programs in his home county, Kitui!
“I was overwhelmed and thanked Almighty God to get that chance — and funny enough, to work in my home county,” he said. “I felt God had answered my prayer.”
Since 2015, Geoffrey and his team at Fadhili Trust have been busy working with local churches in the county of Katui, mobilizing them to bring holistic change to their communities. Geoffrey has seen firsthand the transforming power of the Gospel spreading throughout Kitui.
“I greatly thank the Fadhili Trust as an organization for trusting me and giving me the opportunity to work with them as a field officer in my county,” says Geoffrey.
By supporting Tearfund you are making it possible for Geoffrey and our local church partners to make real change in their own communities. You help us empower local leadership in countries like Kenya through innovative programs like VSLs. People living in Kitui are recognizing their God-given talents and are investing in sustainable ways to lift themselves out of poverty. You make all of this possible — thank you!
