A Whole-Life Transformation
The SHG not only changed Mamitu’s life, but has inspired her to change the lives of others in her community
As a poor woman within a culture that enforces women’s roles within the home and denies them land ownership, Mamitu gained the unthinkable through her SHG and membership of the Cluster Level Association. Her membership allowed not only for individual economic empowerment but for a newfound respect and recognition within her community.
While women used to lack a source of income, SHGs have allowed women like Mamitu to save their small earnings to borrow and invest, enabling them to find dignity and financial freedom despite their lack of assets. Her membership has enabled her to send her daughter abroad and has provided her a safe place to save and invest, as well as given her access to loans.
As a leader and member of the Abenezer CLA, she actively works to support others in her community. Knowing the hardship of poverty herself, she desires to support vulnerable children by sponsoring them to gain access to the Abenezer school, and to see other community members be changed by SHG’s.
Mamitu is one glimpse of whole-life transformation. The SHG not only changed her life, but has inspired and enabled her to change the lives of others in her community.
