Your Questions!

What standards do you adhere to?

In addition to our own values, mission, goals, and our commitment to do no harm, Tearfund Canada adheres to the three recognized sets of standards for humanitarian work.

The Core Humanitarian Standard on Quality and Accountability place people and communities at the centre of humanitarian action. This standard involves 9 commitments to improve the quality and effectiveness of the assistance we provide:

  1. Humanitarian response is appropriate and relevant
  2. Humanitarian response is effective and timely
  3. Humanitarian response strengthens local capacities and avoids negative effects
  4. Humanitarian response is based on communication, participation and feedback
  5. Complaints are welcome and addressed
  6. Humanitarian response is coordinated and complimentary
  7. Humanitarian actors continuously learn and improve
  8. Staff are supported to do their job effectively, and are treated fairly and equitably
  9. Resources are managed and used responsibly for their intended purpose

The Sphere Humanitarian Standards are a set of principles and minimum standards in four technical areas of humanitarian response:

  1. Water supply, sanitation and hygiene promotion
  2. Food security and nutrition
  3. Shelter and settlement
  4. Health

These rights-based sectoral standards set the parameters for the daily lives of individuals.

The Red Cross Fundamental Principles ensure that immediate help is available to whoever needs it, regardless of their race, political beliefs, religion, social status or culture:

  1. Humanity
  2. Impartiality
  3. Neutrality
  4. Independence
  5. Voluntary Service
  6. Unity
  7. Universality

Tearfund Canada is also an accredited member of the Canadian Centre for Christian Charities. Through our membership, we adhere to the following standards:

  2. Diligent Governance
