How can I learn about the countries where Tearfund Canada works?
Tearfund Canada works around the globe by partnering with local churches in places that are the least likely to receive aid and support.
We work with local churches right in their community, empowering them to take the lead and tackle the broken relationships at the root of poverty.
Since there is no limit to the number of problems to solve, we have a rigorous set of criteria that helps us focus on the areas of greatest need and where your donations can have the greatest impact.
Currently, we work in nine countries throughout the world, many of which are extremely vulnerable due to war, economic poverty, or a changing climate.
One example is in the in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where more than 75% of the population is surviving on one meal a day. COVID-19 is threatening the population and cutting off supply routes, limiting economic activity even further.
With the generous support of our donors, we are joining with our local church partner – the Baptist Church of Central Africa – to help farmers overcome hunger through the introduction of new crops and innovative farming methods. We also established savings groups that give families the ability to grow their businesses and lift themselves out of poverty.
Another example is in South Sudan where we work with victims of sexual and gender-based violence through our local parter, the Centre for Emergency and Development Support (CEDS).
In South Sudan an estimated 70% of girls over twelve have been victims of sexual violence.
Working with CEDS, Tearfund is committed to stopping sexual violence and addressing the hidden physical, spiritual, emotional, and social wounds these women face. We do this through both advocacy and biblically-based, trauma-informed care.
