WHAT'S HAPPENING IN THE DEMOCRATIC REBUBLIC OF CONGO?

A growing Ebola outbreak is worsening an already fragile humanitarian crisis in the eastern provinces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where years of conflict and displacement have left millions of people vulnerable.

Communities already facing insecurity, overcrowding, and limited access to healthcare are now confronting the rapid spread of Ebola. Local health systems are under immense strain as families struggle to access the care and information they need to stay safe.

Tearfund is working with local partners in DR Congo to help prevent the spread of Ebola through urgent community outreach, education, awareness campaigns, and frontline support. Our goal is to raise $50,000 to bring protection, care, and hope to vulnerable communities affected by this crisis.

WHAT IS EBOLA?

According to the Centers for Disease Control, “Ebola disease is caused by a group of viruses…. These viruses can cause serious illness that, without treatment, can cause death. People with Ebola disease may experience fever, aches, pains, and fatigue. As the person becomes sicker, symptoms …may include diarrhea, vomiting, and unexplained bleeding.”

As of May 26, there were more than 900 suspected cases and 220 deaths. Initially detected in Bunia, the outbreak has spread to Beni, Butembo, and Goma, raising concerns about undetected transmission elsewhere.

The strain of ebola currently spreading in DRC has no available vaccine and carries a very high fatality rate.

HOW IS TEARFUND RESPONDING?

Tearfund Canada is working closely with our local partner to connect them with the support needed to help stop the spread of Ebola and care for those who have been infected. Our partner, Communauté Baptiste au Centre de l’Afrique (CBCA), is rapidly opening the doors of its hospitals to coordinate emergency prevention and treatment efforts. Through national and international support, CBCA is serving on the front lines – helping isolate cases, strengthen community awareness, and save lives.
