Preaching to a Hungry Congregation

Church initiative to tackle challenges like hunger, drought, and education by establishing saving groups and promoting sustainable practice

"They cannot be still in church because of famine."

“This area has many challenges. It goes without saying that the drought is evident. There is hunger both for the people and for the animals,” Reverend Ndambuki tells us of the many challenges his congregation in rural Kenya faces. Families go to sleep hungry, which causes children to not pay attention in school and families who attend church struggle to listen. “They cannot be still in church because of famine.”

Drought has always been part of life in this part of Kenya, but changes in the climate have exacerbated the problem. Growing vegetables and fruit to feed their family, let alone make extra income is nearly impossible with traditional farming methods in the heat and drought. People also face a lack of education because of the inability to pay school fees. But in the midst of this, Eaglerise Baptist Church stands strong.

In 2021, Tearfund’s Church partner, Fadhili, met up with Reverend Ndambuki and joined forces. Through church-based community transformation training, the church was better able to meet the immense needs around it.

“Together with Fadhili, we created several saving groups within the church. These groups have been extremely beneficial. Many families started kitchen gardens. New members have started all kinds of businesses such as selling vegetables and plans are doubling constantly.”

“And not just members of the church. The groups have also encouraged others to join. Through this, church membership grew.” Although Reverend Ndambuki and his church still have many challenges they are empowered and working together towards change. Reverend Ndambuki continues to preach the gospel Sunday morning but now his congregation is full. Donors like you are helping it act as a shining light to all those who pass its doors.

Your support helps churches become places of strength and hope for the whole community.
