Florence got away by the skin of her teeth when rebels stormed her village in DR Congo.Â
Now a widow caring for her grandchildren in Luconga, she’s trying desperately to farm to survive—but her soil is tired, and so is she.
Her grandchildren search the house for food, but they find nothing to eat.
Florence has watched as her neighbours transformed their farms through Tearfund’s agricultural training program. Families nearby went from hunger to eating three meals a day, expanding their farms, and sending their children back to school.
Just next door, one of Florence’s neighbours—a 70-year-old man—told us his harrowing story. Forced to flee his home by what locals call “throat cutters,” he returned with nothing—not even a tool or a grain of food. “Life was dark—I couldn’t survive,” he shared. “I had to start from scratch.“
Now, like thousands of internally displaced people in DR Congo, Florence and her neighbours are fighting for survival amid escalating conflict and desperate food shortages.
“All I ask for is a chance,” Florence says.
