Emergency Response

When disaster strikes, we are there in Jesus’ name to provide emergency relief and comfort to victims.

When disaster stricks, everything is lost.

When conflict and disaster arise, the poor are usually the hardest hit. Approximately 69% of all people killed by disasters around the world are those who live in poverty.

Without social and public safety nets, people can be left with nothing and have to rebuild their lives from scratch. In the most severe situations, rapid subsequent disasters prevents families from being able to recover; perpetuating the cycle of poverty and throwing many more into it.

On the foundation of faith that God will one day make all things new, we work to follow Jesus’ call and help the most vulnerable affected by the disaster. This includes rushing aid to meet immediate needs, such as food, water, shelter, sanitation and medical care; and carefully designing projects that aid in long-term recovery.

How We Respond

When war and disaster threaten the safety of families and communities,
we rush in to support both the relief process and the road to recovery.

What happens when an emergency occurs?

Our Programming

Our global network of partners allows us to respond to emergencies and provide relief practically anywhere in the world. Through our partnership with the Canadian Foodgrains Bank, we can often multiply the impact of your gift 2X, 3X or even 4X.

Relief

When disaster strikes, we rush in, providing urgent emergency relief to anyone in need–regardless of who they are or where they’re from. When a disaster first strikes, we work with our local partners to assess the situation and determine the best response. This may involve providing emergency food, water, sanitation and medical care.

Recovery

After the initial crisis subsides, our goal is to transition families from receiving relief onto a path of recovery. From helping them replant crops to trauma healing, our goal is to help the whole-person. Our innovative NEXUS programming combines relief and recovery efforts in one project, ensuring a seamless and effective path to help families rebuild what they’ve lost–and then some.

Resilience

The best disaster response is to avoid having to do it in the first place. We work with local churches and communities to reduce the risk of disasters and prepare response plans for when they do happen. Our programs focus on building the resilience of families, helping them adapt to changing circumstances and be well-prepared for anything they may encounter.

NEXUS Programming:

Transitioning from Relief to Self-Sufficiency

How do we transition communities from displacement to resilience? NEXUS Programming is designed to do that. It helps families who have suffered from years of war and destruction rebuild their lives. Through NEXUS Programming, initial assistance and aid create a springboard that supports families on the road to self-sustainability. In addition to food assistance, families are starting to sow new farms and build local economies to escape poverty for good and create long-term change.

Unleashed Impact

Through Tearfund, you’re making a lasting difference — for one person, one family, one community at a time.

Hope evaporated with the rain

When David’s land became barren and dry, hope seemed lost. At nearly 80, he struggled to provide for his family in South Sudan’s harsh climate. Farming was impossible, and food was scarce.

But then Tearfund stepped in. Through the local church, David’s family received emergency food aid, helping them survive the extreme dry season. “If it weren’t for the assistance, life would have been terrible,” David reflects, giving thanks to God.

Today, thanks to Tearfund and its supporters, David’s family has hope once again.

Tangible hope

Fleeing war in Sudan, Susan and her family sought refuge in South Sudan. Tragedy struck when her son, suffering from Hemophilia A, died due to lack of treatment. Now, her youngest is ill, and without income, medication is out of reach.

In the midst of their suffering, Tearfund stepped in, providing tangible hope in the form of food assistance to Susan and other refugees.

Everything was left behind

When conflict tore through her community, Teresa left everything behind. As a single mother struggling to provide for her children, life was already hard. Then, forced to flee with only the clothes on their backs, they sought refuge in a relief camp.

Through Tearfund’s support, Teresa found hope amidst devastation. “It’s a plan of God to send you here,” she says.

He lost 100 livestock

When a severe drought hit Ethiopia, Denge lost 90 cattle, 10 camels, and nearly all his crops. The drought left his village with nothing, and Denge became bedridden from malnutrition.

Hope arrived through a Tearfund’s food assistance. For the first time in years, Denge and his family had enough to eat. His health was restored, and he expressed his gratitude, saying, “Thank you, Canada.”
