Education brings future hope to this community

See how one church in Kenya is tackling the urgent need for education and water with innovative community solutions.

In the heart of Nguuni, Kenya, one passionate pastor has ignited radical change within an entire locality.

Where there once was a severe lack of education and water, his church has and continues to strive for profound transformation.

Pastor Solomon Zoka’s deep compassion for the local people has driven significant change at Africa Brotherhood Church (ABC) in Nguuni, Kenya, for the past two years. With over 23 years of pastoral experience, Pastor Solomon is eager to foster the well-being of his church members and the surrounding area. He saw the challenges faced by his community, and through the Church-based Community Transformation (CCT) training he received, he was equipped to aid the people and help meet their needs.

Pastor Solomon Zoka's church is transforming Nguuni, Kenya with schools, water projects, and community-focused solutions inspired by Tearfund's CCT training.

Tearfund’s CCT training works through its partners to equip local churches to drive sustainable development, teaching communities to identify and address their own needs while promoting spiritual and social growth.

Inspired by this training, Pastor Solomon took action to address the urgent educational needs in his community. He saw that the local schools were too far away, preventing children from attending. So, to tackle this problem, Africa Brotherhood Church built a primary school nearby. Just last December, they also finished building a high school, funded by the church’s Sunday collections. Pastor Solomon states that they built these schools “to help the community have quality education that can enable the students or the kids in the community to be able to take care of themselves in the future.” CCT is about sustainable and local development, and Pastor Solomon’s church embodies this mission.

However, the ABC didn’t stop there. When a young boy’s older sister died suddenly, leaving behind her three children, his family was unable to pay for school fees and the boy was forced to unenroll. Grieved by the situation, Pastor Solomon stepped in. With his training, the church is now able to pay for not only his school fees, but for his clothing, uniform, and school supplies as well!

Currently, Africa Brotherhood Church is fundraising for a nearby borehole to allow for easy water collection within the community. Thanks to CCT, the community in Nguuni, Kenya is being actively and radically transformed through the local church. “For the glory of God,” Pastor Solomon says emphatically.

Your generosity allows for Tearfund to continue to train and equip churches like Pastor Solomon’s to transform their communities, sponsor families in need, and provide for those in dire situations.
