31 Days of Prayer: Ending Poverty in Jesus’ Name

Prayer changes us and it changes the world.

This January, we invite you to journey with Tearfund Canada through 31 days of heartfelt prayer, reflecting on God’s heart for justice and His desire to restore brokenness in our world. Each day, one of our staff members shares a short devotional and prayer from the countries we serve — places where local churches are helping families overcome poverty, build resilience, and discover hope in Jesus’ name.

As you read, pause, and pray, we hope you’ll sense God’s presence and His invitation to join Him in His restoring work. Thank you for standing with us, and with the global Church, as together we seek a world where all can experience the fullness of life God intends.

Give thanks to God

“All your works shall give thanks to you, O Lord, and all your saints shall bless you.” Psalm 145:10

Coming from a place of abundance like we have in Canada, it is a humbly experience to witness those with little giving God the glory for what they have. As families, villages and communities are developing sustainable resources through the work of our local partners, they remind us that in everything we are commanded to give thanks.

Oh Lord, we thank you for everything that we have and we recognize that it all comes from you. Help us to learn from those that have little that all glory is yours. Bless the families and churches in Kenya as they build resilience and provide for their needs.

Pray for peace and justice

“He will judge between the nations and will settle disputes for many peoples. They will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation will not take up sword against nation, nor will they train for war anymore.” Isaiah 2:4

The DRC is an incredible place. Home to over 109 million people within about 250 cultural groups who speak around 700 languages, the richness of human capital is impressive. The vastness of natural resources are practically unparalleled in the world, too. DRC is home to the 2nd largest rainforest in the world, the highest hydropower potential in Africa, incredibly bountiful biodiversity, over 80 million hectares of arable land, and an impressive store of valuable minerals and gemstones. Despite this unparalleled wealth, DRC has suffered from a history of conflict, upheaval, and political instability. Ironically, some of the very resources that DRC boasts have led to significant human and natural resource exploitation, resulting in displacement, malnutrition, illness, sexual violence, and overall poverty.

Our partners in the DRC, CBCA (Communauté Baptiste au Centre de l’Afrique), work in areas in North Kivu where conflict has been the worst. Their values include being hospitable and generous, and focusing on dignity in care. While militia wage conflict right in the midst of their communities, they are actively working with over 500,000 members in 605 schools and 157 medical facilities. Their work with Tearfund focuses on food security, gender equity, and increased household incomes. In an area where dietary diversity and food access is extremely limited, they have trained farmers who have registered a 250 percent increase in bean production and a 931 percent increase in potato production. Pushing back against the extreme violence in their surroundings, farmers are taking their ploughshares to improve their living conditions. The local church has even successfully negotiated with militia groups to spare arable land and harvests.

Lord, we pray for the people of the DRC. May our local partner, CBCA, be preserved from the dangers that present themselves daily in their work. May peace be restored, and the land stewarded for the thriving of all who live there, not exploited for the benefit of few and the demise of the many. May the vision of Isaiah 2:4 come to pass for Your glory. Amen.

Pray for hope amid hardship

“Those who sow with tears will reap with songs of joy.” Psalm 126:5

“We were starving. Thank God for the people behind the change.” These words still stay with me from a man I met in Ethiopia.

Changing climate and poor growing conditions make life very hard for farming families in rural Ethiopia. Many struggle to grow enough food on their small one acre farms to feed their families and escape poverty. Tearfund Canada is working with local partners to train farmers in better farming methods, called conservation agriculture. This training is helping families grow more food, earn income, and build a better future. These programs are transforming the lives of thousands of people.

Dear God, Thank You for the farmers and families in Ethiopia. You see their struggles and their hard work. Thank You for the people and partners who are bringing help and hope. Please bless the fields, the crops, and the hands that farm the land. Give families enough food to eat, strength for each day, and hope for the future.

Pray for renewal and restoration

“See, I am doing a new thing. Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?” Isaiah 43:19

Life in First Nations communities has long been intertwined with the buffalo, yet generations of loss have left deep wounds. Now, through courage and collaboration, we see renewal taking shape. Elders, leaders, and families are working together to restore the herds, reclaim inherited lands, and strengthen cultural identity. As I watch relationships being rebuilt and something as meaningful as the buffalo being restored, I am truly inspired.

People who have endured so much hardship continue to trust in God to provide, to heal, and to multiply. What a God trusting and resilient community.

Heavenly Father, give strength to Loko Koa and every First Nations family committed to bringing back the buffalo. Bless the hands that care for the herds, renew the land, and sustain the vision of restoration. May Your creation be healed, Your people encouraged, and Your covenant of renewal fulfilled across generations.

Pray for wise stewardship

“Again, it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted his wealth to them.” Matthew 25:14

The stories we hear from the church in Tanzania always demonstrate the incredible innovation, creativity, and entrepreneurship of people. It reminds me of the parable of the talents, how a master entrusted his servants with various amounts of money to use and improve. When he returns two of the servants have increased the entrusted money, and one simply hid it away. Through Tearfund’s Church and Community Transformation program, churches in Tanzania have been mobilizing the resources, skills, and knowledge they have been entrusted with to steward and improve their community. Through farmers testing new crops, savings groups investing in locally led new businesses, and churches caring for the most vulnerable when the government will not. Let us be inspired by the church in Tanzania to maximize the resources, skills, knowledge, and opportunities we have to care for our communities and mobilize the church around the world.

Dear God, thank you for the resources, skills, knowledge, and opportunities you have given to the church in Tanzania and globally to care for those who need it most. Continue to encourage the leaders and workers who are diligently training communities to lift themselves out of poverty in innovative ways. In your precious name, amen.

Pray for peace in suffering

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives.” John 14:27

Life in South Sudan is difficult. In the communities in which our local partner works, the climate is harsh, and natural resources are sparse. Yet despite these challenges, the local church continues to serve faithfully, offering hope and practical care in the midst of struggle.

Heavenly Father, we lift up South Sudan before You. Bring healing to broken communities, strength to weary hearts, and hope to those who feel forgotten. Let Your peace reign over villages and cities, silencing fear and violence. Raise leaders who walk in justice and compassion. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Pray for the land and livelihoods

“You care for the land and water it; you enrich it abundantly. The streams of God are filled with water to provide the people with grain.” Psalm 65:9

While India has a large economy it is prone for many large scale disasters that affects the livelihood of its people. Flooding and landslides, which is then followed by drought creates a host of uncertainties for the people of India. But God is providing a way through the wilderness, through our projects of conservation agriculture and resource management to limit soil erosion. God is showing up in ways that are helping the people of India overcome their difficulties.

Lord Jesus, as you have informed, in this world we will experience trouble but that we are to be people of good cheer, because you have overcome the world. Help us to make the necessary steps to create change and find ways through the strength of your community to both be a light and beacon of hope to see abundance over scarcity.

Pray for creation to rest and renew

“The land must have a year of rest.” Leviticus 25:5

When the Mbui Nzau community in the drylands of southeastern Kenya decided to come together to restore their natural environment in 2023, remarkable ecological renewal began to take place. Using local laws, they were able to stop the illegal harvesting of sand and the illegal clearing of bush. Within six months, a spring of clean, fresh mineral water reappeared where it had not been seen for twenty years. As the Mbui Nzau environmental champions explain, water does not like to be naked. Securing and providing a sabbath to sand and bushes has seen the return of fresh water to this dry land, including a brook that this spring is recreating downstream.

Our Creator, we thank you for your ecological faithfulness. We thank you that you made a covenant with your created world in the days of Noah, and that you are faithful to it. Help us to give the land, and ourselves, sabbaths that refresh and regenerate. In Christ’s name. Amen.

Pray for the church in community

“And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” Colossians 3:17

When the local church awakens to its holistic mission it establishes its social value within their community, putting Jesus in the center of the community. This is what is happening throughout the project area that our local partner Fadhilli Trust works. By training churches to reach their God given potential whole communities are seeing Jesus and being reconciled back to their Creator.

Father, we pray for the church in Ethiopia that it will reach its God given potential to reconcile their communities back to you. We thank you that you are restoring relationships and your creation through your people. Bless the leadership of our partners as well as the church as they seek to follow Jesus where the need is greatest.

January 10

Pray for hospitality and protection

“Show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it.” Hebrews 13:2

Over and over, I experience the people of northeastern Democratic Republic of Congo as dignified, focused, hard working and forthright people who trust their Creator deeply. And over and over, they experience violent raids from militia groups. And still, over and over, families in NE DRC always invite those who have lost their homes, limbs, family members and livelihoods. Everyone knows that those who host today may be the ones who need to be hosted tomorrow. Hosting means sharing everything that comes from the farm and from the family small businesses. Being hosted means helping on the farm and in the small businesses. The hosted and the hospitable experience and extend God’s love.

Our Loving God, thank you for dwelling with those who have fled and for dwelling with those who are hosting. Thank you that good overcomes the evil of violence and greed. We pray for the end of violence in DRC. We pray in the name of Christ our Lord, Amen.

Pray for churches serving boldly

“Again, it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted his wealth to them.” Matthew 25:14

Imagine a church with eyes open to the needs around them. A congregation willing and eager to contribute. A church growing spiritually and numerically. In Tanzania at this very moment this is becoming reality. Bishop Dickson Chilongani of the Diocese of Central Tanganyika shares how churches trained through Church and Community Transformation are changing mindsets, not helping others only financially but with their skills and talents too. Congregations are looking at their neighbours and the very needs that they can meet, and meeting them. Sometimes it is as simple as providing a wheelchair to a woman in the village to give her freedom and dignity, other times it is business training or participation in a village savings and loans group. The church is seeing radical transformation.

Lord, thank you for what you are doing through your church. Encourage and strengthen the church in Tanzania as they reach beyond their walls and serve their communities. And help me become more like them, open my eyes to those in need around me and give me wisdom and courage to help.

Pray for justice and humility

“He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you. To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” Micah 6:8

In Canada, much of the work we are invited into begins with listening. Communities that have experienced generations of injustice, exclusion, and loss are leading their own journeys of healing and restoration. Our role is not to arrive with answers, but to walk alongside with humility, patience, and faithfulness.

At Tearfund Canada, we believe God is already at work in these places. Acting justly means standing with communities as they pursue restoration on their own terms. Loving mercy means committing to long term relationships, even when progress feels slow. Walking humbly reminds us that transformation is God’s work, not ours to control.

Heavenly Father, teach us to walk humbly with you and with one another. Give us listening hearts and patient spirits as we seek justice and mercy in the places you have called us to serve. May our partnerships reflect your love, faithfulness, and deep respect for every community. Amen.

Pray for love in action

“Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves.” Romans 12:9–10

Life in South Sudan is difficult. In the communities in which our local partner CIRDA works in Northern Bahr El Ghazal, the climate is harsh, and natural resources are sparse. The region hosts thousands of refugees fleeing violence in neighbouring Sudan, and is prone to cycles of flooding and drought. But despite these challenges, the local church is a beacon of service.

CIRDA’s work with the local church includes training on trauma response. Leaders tell countless stories of the church being a safe harbour of protection, and a place where victims gather for practical and emotional support. Through Church and Community Transformation activities, churches are mobilising resources to help community members in very practical ways from providing post delivery care packages to new mothers, to building homes for widows, and even the construction of an entire maternity ward. It is so encouraging to see the church in practical action demonstrating their devotion to one another in love.

Lord, we pray for the people of South Sudan, where the conditions are so harsh and challenging. Comfort the grieving, heal the broken, and provide for those in need. We are grateful for CIRDA who tirelessly empowers the local church, and encourages them to continue their faithful service. Amen.

Pray for women’s strength and leadership

“God is within her, she will not fall.” Psalm 46:5

In many rural communities across Kenya, women are often viewed as second class citizens, carrying the primary responsibility for both the home and the farm. Yet, with the introduction of Village Savings and Loans Associations, many families are beginning to increase their income and glimpse a brighter future. Women are now building remarkable businesses of their own opening the first bakery in their community, selling clean water to their neighbours, and earning income from the herbs and vegetables grown in their kitchen gardens. Through these savings groups, women are not only transforming their households, but reshaping what is possible for their communities.

Dear God, thank You for the women and families in rural Kenya. You see their hard work and their hopes for a better future. Thank You for the savings groups that are helping families grow, earn income, and care for one another. Please give them strength when work is hard, wisdom as they make choices, and joy as they see their lives change. May these families continue to see hope, opportunity, and Your love each day.

Pray for community and belonging

“Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ.” 1 Corinthians 12:12

When left with nothing Ms Gema, widowed raising three children, was met by a church that included her. She was invited to join a Village Savings and Loans group run through the local church. Her hope was that she could sustain her family with dignity and not handouts. Together the group of 31 people put their skills and resources together to each benefit and improve their futures. Together they invested in a sunflower processing facility to increase the funds available to their members. With the loan that she received she was able to establish an onion garden, build a business and send her three children to school. On her own, this would have been impossible, but with the support and empowerment of a community around her, one of her children is now attending university.

Lord, thank you for your goodness and your care for Ms Gema and her children. Help me become helpful to those around me like Ms Gema’s community was. And may you continue to bless the hands and hard work of those in the village savings group so that others may share in the favour of your goodness.

Pray for healing and protection

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” Psalm 34:18

Life in South Sudan is marked by both extraordinary beauty and profound struggle. Families continue to face severe food insecurity, violence, and displacement, yet their resilience remains remarkable. Communities are working tirelessly to protect the vulnerable, care for their land, and build peace even in the midst of an ongoing crisis.

Through initiatives such as trauma healing, raising awareness on the dangers of sexual and gender based violence, and empowering communities, we are witnessing communities come together with a shared commitment to protect and uplift one another.

Heavenly Father, give strength to every family in South Sudan confronting hunger, violence, and uncertainty. Bless the hands that cultivate the soil, protect women and children, and care for the land’s abundance. Guide the leaders of South Sudan with wisdom, insight, and integrity, so they may make decisions that promote peace and the well being of all. Inspire them to choose justice and to work for the good of their nation rather than for personal gain. May Your creation be healed, and Your people encouraged.

Pray for faithful partnerships

“The Lord bless you and keep you.” Numbers 6:24

Across Canada, partnership is built through trust, patience, and shared commitment. Tearfund Canada’s work reminds us that transformation happens when we show up consistently, listen deeply, and honour the leadership already present in communities.

Faithfulness in these relationships reflects God’s steady presence with us. Even when outcomes are slow or unseen, God continues to work through small acts of obedience and care.

Heavenly Father, bless the partnerships and relationships that sustain this work. Help us remain faithful, patient, and humble as we walk alongside communities seeking restoration. May your presence guide every step. Amen.

Pray for guidance and provision

“The Lord will guide you always; he will satisfy your needs.” Isaiah 58:11

In many parts of Ethiopia, families face ongoing uncertainty as they work the land, never knowing what each season will bring. In these moments, guidance matters just as much as provision. Through the support of local partners and the leadership of the local church, farmers are gaining knowledge, confidence, and renewed purpose. As communities learn together and share what they have, they are discovering that God’s guidance often comes step by step through trusted relationships, new skills, and perseverance rooted in hope.

Dear God,thank You for being a God who guides Your people with wisdom and care. We lift up families in Ethiopia who are seeking direction as they work the land and provide for their loved ones. Strengthen local partners and churches as they walk alongside communities, sharing knowledge and encouragement. May Your guidance bring confidence, dignity, and hope for the days ahead. Amen.

Pray for fruitful land and unity

“May our barns be filled with crops of every kind. May the flocks in our fields multiply by the thousands, even tens of thousands, and may our oxen be loaded down with produce.” Psalm 144:13–14

The DR Congo is a place that has a huge wealth of natural resources, making the grounds there very fertile for crop production. It also has the second largest rainforest in the world, with many clear water lakes and rivers. And yet, climate change as well as civil unrest has affected how the land must be managed. Fortunately, God is answering our prayers and those of our local church partners who are making an impact within their communities with programs that foster better food security and production.

Heavenly Father, as both the land and people in this region of the world need your healing and restoration, we pray they will indeed see the light of your love and rally behind one another to make use of the resources you have provided for the DR Congo. We pray for unity so that as they work together their land will produce more and avoid the traps that bring strife and destruction.

Pray for perseverance and  trust

“Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.” Proverbs 16:3

Across India, families continue to work faithfully amid uncertainty. Livelihoods are shaped by resilience, shared effort, and trust in God’s provision. Through local partners, Tearfund Canada supports communities as they strengthen skills and adapt together.

This reminds us that hope is built patiently step by step grounded in faith and perseverance.

Heavenly Father, strengthen families and communities in India. Bless their work and guide their plans. May your faithfulness sustain them in every season. Amen.

January 21

Give thanks for shared generosity

“There were no needy persons among them. For from time to time those who owned land or houses sold them, brought the money from the sales and put it at the apostles’ feet, and it was distributed to anyone who had need.” Acts 4:34–35

I think that if the early church knew about savings groups they would have been starting them everywhere. The early church was focused on spreading the Good News and caring for the poor. The local church in Kenya lives and works in some of the poorest regions and have a heart for their communities to thrive.

One of the ways they are loving their communities is by teaching people to save money to invest in the future of their families and communities through savings groups. Group members are intimately involved in each other’s lives and support each other through all seasons. Thanks to the initiative of the local church, families and communities are helping each other lift themselves out of poverty.

Heavenly Father, thank you for the gift of community. Continue to bless the local churches in Kenya who are helping to bring transformation to their communities. In your holy name, amen.

January 22

Pray for God’s blessing and presence

“The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you.” Numbers 6:24–25

Across Ethiopia, families continue to work hard to care for one another in changing and uncertain conditions. Farming households rely on perseverance shared learning and hope for the future. Through trusted local partners, communities are strengthening their skills and building resilience step by step.

This work reflects God’s faithfulness not through quick solutions but through long term commitment and relationship. Change grows where patience and trust are cultivated together.

Heavenly Father, bless families and communities in Ethiopia as they work toward stability and dignity. Strengthen local partners and churches serving faithfully. May your presence bring encouragement and hope each day. Amen.

Pray for mutual care

“The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it.” — Genesis 2:15

For First Nations communities, the buffalo is more than an animal—it is a symbol of life, provision, and cultural identity. The work of bringing back the buffalo is about restoring what was lost and honoring God’s design for people and creation. As buffalo return to the land, communities are reclaiming traditions, strengthening food security, and renewing relationships with the earth. This work reminds us that healing is both spiritual and practical. God’s restoration often involves remembering, repairing, and walking forward together.

Creator God, we thank You for the work of restoration happening through the return of the buffalo. Bring healing to First Nations communities, renewal to the land, and wisdom to all who walk this journey together. May justice, reconciliation, and hope continue to grow.

Pray for God’s guidance

“The Lord will guide you always.” — Isaiah 58:11

In many rural communities across Ethiopia, farming is not just a livelihood—it is the foundation of family and community life. As climate challenges grow, farmers and local churches are learning to trust God’s guidance while adopting new, sustainable farming practices. Through agriculture training and Church and Community Transformation, communities are discovering practical ways forward together. What is especially encouraging is seeing the church walk alongside families, offering both spiritual encouragement and practical support. Even in uncertainty, God continues to guide His people toward renewal and hope.
