“Both my children can now attend school!”
We all know women who inspire us. Women who walk in grace with Jesus, are exemplary mothers, determined to give their children a better future and a hope. This is what we think of when we think of Agnes.
At 32, Agnes and her husband raise their two children together. A 7-year-old son, and a 3-year-old daughter. Like most parents, they work hard to give their children all that they need, and hope they will grow up knowing the Lord. But, living in the remote village of Kituneni, Kenya, it is often hard to make ends meet. As a taxi driver, her husband Nicodemus, often struggled with unpredictable earnings. Sometimes, they could only afford to eat once a day.
Skilled with tailoring and sewing, Anges set-out to help the family earn more money so that they could escape the poverty that plagued them. She heard about one of Tearfund’s village savings and loan groups – called “The Soft Voice” – and decided to join.
Thanks to donors like you, there she was able to save little by little. She eventually was able to take a loan of $78 from the group to setup her own sewing shop. It didn’t take long until she repaid the loan and took another of $130 for a more specialized sewing machine.
Her business exploded. Her earnings increased from about 50 cents per day to above $40! She used these increased earnings to buy food, pay school fees, and increase her savings in case of emergency. She feels empowered and is thankful to God for giving her this opportunity that many other women across Africa long to have.
Many more women want to have the same opportunity Agnes did to provide for their families.
With your help, we can continue applying the power of savings groups to help transform lives.
