Tearfund Sunday

Devote one Sunday to seeing people freed from poverty, living transformed lives, and reaching their God-given potential.

Tearfund Sunday is an opportunity for your church to dedicate one day a year to helping families escape extreme poverty and experience full life in the name of Jesus.

Provided with everything needed to run a morning service, your congregation will hear how God is working powerfully through His local church to transform their communities and help families see a future of hope and opportunity.

Tearfund Sunday is an opportunity to:

Participate in Christ’s command to “love thy neighbour” by helping families escape poverty using their own God-given skills and abilities.

Empower and come alongside churches in Kenya and other countries to reach into their communities and address the immense physical and spiritual needs around them.

Inspire and energize your congregation with everything you need to run a Sunday morning including an inspiring video and sermon notes.

This Year's Theme:

Renewed Hope

For families living in rural Kenya, it’s normal to be hungry. Unpredictable rain means access to water is a major challenge. Crop failures are common, and with it widespread hunger.

There is a belief that the government will help–but they never come. Disunity cuts through communities, ethnicities, even churches; making it difficult to solve problems together.

But in the midst of pain, stories of renewal are being told. Some churches in the area are starting to lead the change. In Christ, relationships are being renewed. The land is being restored. And minds transformed!

Join us to explore how God is working through the local church in rural Kenya to break the bonds of poverty and “make all things new.”

Yes! We would love to arrange to have one of our seasoned staff or volunteers come to speak at your church on Tearfund Sunday. Please contact our Director of Church Relations, Don Miller, at dmiller@tearfund.ca or 613-371-6246 to explore further.

We work side-by-side with local churches in some of the world’s poorest places, empowering them to make a difference in their communities. This is done through an approached called Church-based Community Transformation.

The process starts with Bible studies that introduce the church to integral mission and helps them describe their God-given gifts and assets.  From there, church members engage the community to identity the spiritual and physical needs in the village and create a plan of action.

Along with its local partners, Tearfund also will provide practical training in agriculture, savings groups, and other areas to help families earn more money and climb out of extreme poverty using their own hands.

The end result is a village fully transformed, with the church as the catalyst for change in the centre. The bonds of physical and spiritual poverty are broken and families experience new life.

This year, funds raised from Tearfund Sunday will help local churches transform their communities in several countries, including—but not limited to—Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Funds will help empower and equip local churches so that they can be the catalyst for change within their communities, meeting the immense physical and spiritual needs around them. Funds will also be used to help train vulnerable families in agriculture, savings groups, and business acumen so that they will be able to grow more food, earn more revenue, and slowly climb out of poverty. Funds may also go towards climate adaptive practices that help families adapt to changing climate patterns and shocks such as droughts and floods.

Recipient communities and families are based on rigorous evaluation in partnership with local churches and NGOs. As much as possible, projects are established in communities that are at most need and focus on the most vulnerable: pregnant women and single mothers, widows, the elderly, child-headed households, and those living with disabilities.

Yes. We have sermons on a wide variety of topics including: a Biblical response to poverty, justice, creation care, and more. If this is of interest to you, please let us know.

Excellent. We would love to help. You can contact Don Miller, Director of Church Relations, at dmiller@tearfund.ca or 613-371-6246.
