This Year's Theme:

The Hunger Season

Families in Ethiopia are experiencing a hunger crisis. COVID has collided with a new drought. People are struggling to survive.

But the hunger goes beyond food. There is also widespread spiritual hunger.

That’s what is so exciting about Tearfund Sunday! Your congregation will not only be helping families eat, you will be empowering local churches to act out the Gospel as they care for their communities.

At one point things became so desperate her children had to eat leaves... But Nigist never stopped believing that God could change their situation.

After her husband left, Nigist had the responsibility of raising her children by herself. The main problem was food. The farm barely produced a harvest. At one point things became so desperate that she and her children were forced to eat leaves.

“I was fervently praying. How could I feed my family? How could I pay for medications if they got sick?” But then, her prayers were answered.

Through the local church, Nigist was provided with food to help feed her family. Moreover, with training to grow her harvest, She learned how to farm grow more than double that of previous harvests! “My life is changed as a result of this training. May God bless you.”

We work side-by-side with local churches in some of the world’s poorest places, empowering them to make a difference in their communities. This is done through an approached called Church-based Community Transformation.

The process starts with bible studies that introduces the church to integral mission and helps them describe their God-given gifts and assets.  From there, church members engage the community to identity the spiritual and physical needs in the village and create a plan of action.

Along with its local partners, Tearfund also will provide practical training in agriculture, savings groups, and other areas to help families earn more money and climb out of extreme poverty using their own hands.

The end result is a village fully transformed, with the church as the catalyst for change in the centre. The bonds of physical and spiritual poverty are broken and families experience new life.

This year, funds raised from Tearfund Sunday will help provide urgently needed food and seeds to extremely hungry families in Ethiopia who are suffering from the recent hunger crisis.

Funds will also be used to support our church-based community transformation projects in East Africa. They will be used to equip and empower churches in some of the poorest places on earth to go beyond their walls and meet the physical and spiritual needs around them.

The approach is multifaceted and is meant to create holistic transformation:

  • Local churches and their members will be equipped to be catalysts for change
  • Families will receive training in simple farming practices that will help them grow 2-3X more food. They will also learn how to adapt their crops to a changing climate
  • Women will be given the opportunity to join savings groups and be trained in financial literacy to help them grow their savings and pay for school fees, farming supplies, or start new businesses
  • Households will be trained in biblical relationships that encourages gender equality and joint decision making

Yes. We have sermons on a wide variety of topics including: a biblical response to poverty, justice, creation care, and more. If this is of interest to you, please let us know.

Excellent. We would love to help. You can contact Don Miller, Director of Church Relations at dmiller@tearfund.ca or 613-371-6246.

The solution to poverty is more than physical, it’s spiritual. Instead of handouts, you will be partnering with local churches to permanently lift families out of poverty. Will you join us?
