In 2020, generous donors like you impacted 195,573 lives.
Famers were able to grow enough to feed their families. Women learned how to grow their savings and start new businesses. Churches were empowered to be salt and light in their communities. And tens of thousands of families were provided emergency relief and love in times of crisis.
Church-Based Community Transformation
Healing the Hidden Scars of Sexual Violence
Through Tearfund, you’re equipping pastors and local church leaders to transform their communities in some of the poorest places on earth. One of those places is in South Sudan, a country ravished by decades of war, famine, and economic turmoil. Last year, donors like you equipped churches in South Sudan to respond to the thousands of women and girls who have been sexually abused.

Field Story:
Light in the Darkness
Not far from her home, Elizabeth was raped and impregnated by a young man who wanted her as his wife. Barely a month later, she was brutally beaten by the man’s brother. Elizabeth didn’t want to be a part of such a violent family. She felt so hopeless that she tried to end her life.
She failed, but her family was devastated. They didn’t know what to do.

Conservation Agriculture
Helping Families Overcome Hunger
How would your life change if your income doubled? Or even tripled? It seems impossible, but it has become a reality for thousands of farming families throughout East Africa.
In 2016, donors like you helped start the Scaling Up Conservation Agriculture (SUCA) program. In partnership with the Canadian Foodgrains bank, we had a massive vision – to train 10,850 farmers how to grow more food and help them climb out of poverty for good!
We’re thrilled to announce that not only did you help us achieve this vision, you helped us surpass it! Over 14,000 farmers increased their crop yields by an average of 216%. With the added crops, families have enough to eat and more income. Many have been able to send their kids to school for the first time. Often run with local churches, families not only know how to grow more food, but that they are made in the image of God and valued by him!
Breaking away from Handouts
Like many farmers in East Africa, Mesele Madebo struggled to grow enough to feed his family. But after he adopted farming practices he learned from one of our local church partners, his life was transformed. He was so excited that he wanted to tell all his neighbours! So he volunteered to be a “local animator.”

Economic Empowerment
The Spark of Innovation
Last year your donations helped form approximately 256 new savings groups helping 5,695 people save for new businesses, education, and emergencies. But that’s not all!
Starting in December 2019, donors like you helped farmers like you dramatically increase their revenue by training them in simple marketing concepts such as supply and demand, market cycles, and selling crops in bulk.
Using these methods and PICS bags to preserve their crops, these farmers were able to increase their revenue an incredible 4.6X on average! Instead of selling 1kg of pigeon peas for 19 cents, farmers were now able to sell them for 88 cents per kg.
The training was such a success that it attracted the attention of savings groups in the area. Although this initial pilot project had a goal of training just 1,000 farmers, we ended up training an incredible 5,959 through work of mouth.

PICS Bags:
Overcoming A Mother's Dilemma
Asnakech Gaushe had a dilemma. Using conservation agriculture practices, she was now able to grow more than enough food for herself and 7 children! It was more food than they have ever seen in their entire lives! Initially, Asnakech had great joy! It flowed out of her. But joy soon turned to concern.
It was impossible for her family to eat all of this before the crops went rotten. She could sell the crops, but since it was harvest, everyone in the village was doing the same – dropping prices to rock bottom. She knew if she sold now, they wouldn’t have enough money to last until next year’s harvest.
But then, seemingly out of nowhere, a simple innovation changed her outcome.
