Why work through the local Church?
Tearfund Canada joins in to enrich the work of the local church not to replace it. Christian leaders live with the challenges of poverty every day. We empower local leaders to implement projects and protect the dignity of the poor.
We deliver agriculture and livelihood programs to local farmers focusing on increasing their yields through sustainable agriculture practices like conservation agriculture. This helps people generate more income from what they grow, moves community towards food security and a view of a future without poverty. Many of our agricultural programs are delivered in partnership with the Canadian Foodgrains Bank, and qualify for up to 4x in matching funding through an agreement with the Government of Canada.
Savings and Self Help Groups
Savings and Self Help groups receive training and mentoring from Tearfund project staff that builds on traditional savings methods. These groups mobilize the rural poor to use their own resources to exit poverty. 89% of groups self manage for years after the training period. Local Pastors and other community leaders are recruited to participate. Once they see the benefits they become advocates for economic empowerment in their communities.
When disaster strikes around the world Tearfund Canada acts quickly to provide emergency food distribution, clean water, sanitation supplies and medical screening. Tearfund Canada is a member of Integral, Alliance, a global network of independent Christian relief and development agencies working together for a faster, more effective and efficient coordination of emergency response to natural and manmade disasters worldwide.
As member of the TEAR family, Tearfund Canada enjoys a collaborative relationship with sister organizations already at work with the local church-organizations in 50 countries around the world. This allows us to respond quickly, effectively and appropriately on behalf of the poorest: the most affected by floods, famines, earthquakes, disease outbreaks and armed conflict.
Tearfund Canada seeks to mobilize and empower the church to fulfill its call to serve the poor. We recognize that people have deeply interconnected needs and that long term exit from poverty requires whole-life transformation – physical, economic, emotional and spiritual. We are a source of information and education for the church on how to carry out integral mission, providing educational resources, workshops and speakers to churches in Canada and the communities around the world where we work.
